Professional community of medical professionals practising modern minimally invasive interventional methods of pain treatment
The Interventional Pain Management Association (IPMA) brings together specialists from various fields, including anesthesiologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, and orthopedic doctors, who are involved in treating patients with chronic pain syndromes.
Established in 2015, IPMA was founded by Ivan Portnyagin, who currently leads the Pain Clinic at the S.S. Yudin City Clinical Hospital in Moscow. In 2017, leading specialists in the field of interventional pain management united within the association. Doctors Ivan Portnyagin, Alexey Voloshin, Pavel Genov, Dmitry Kukhno, Emil Isagulyan, Maxim Glebov, and Vsevolod Lykhin became authors and lecturers of the first educational course on pain medicine in Russia. Currently, Pavel Genov, a doctor of medical sciences and holder of the European Diploma in Pain Medicine (EDPM), is leading IPMA as the President. He is the Head of the Pain Clinic at City Clinical Hospital #52 in Moscow.
The association’s primary communication channels include its website (www.interpain.ru), and a non-public Telegram chat (Pain Detect) for members to exchange clinical experiences. IPMA’s activities and updates are shared on the VKontakte social network, where the association’s page (https://vk.com/painmanagement) has an audience of around 2000 physicians.
IPMA holds a educational license and provides an annual series of educational events for physicians under the umbrella of the «IPMA Pain Treatment School». The school’s current program consists of 11 courses categorized into Basic, Advanced, and Expert levels, covering topics ranging from conservative therapy to interventional pain treatment in various areas of the body.

Every two years, the association organizes an international congress, with participation from physicians not only from Russia but also from countries such as Armenia, Israel, the United States, India, Ireland, and Korea. In recent years, international projects have been initiated, with courses conducted in Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Belarus.
The association’s leadership in Russia focuses on developing clinical guidelines for pain treatment in patients with back pain, arthritis, and peripheral neuropathies. IPMA leaders publish books on pain treatment, with two significant releases in 2023: «Pain Neuromodulation» and «Atlas of Interventional Pain Management».
Currently, IPMA members are practicing across the country, from Kaliningrad to Vladivostok. There are 15 clinical centers associated with IPMA operating in seven major cities in Russia. These centers offer clinical fellowships for specialists in the field of pain medicine.
A joint educational course for Russian and Chinese specialists is planned for 2024 in collaboration with scientists of both countries.
IPMA’s primary goal is to establish a separate medical specialty for «pain management» in Russia. The association invites collaboration from both Russian and international specialists and partners interested in the development of pain medicine.
